Meadow and Tea was founded in 2022 by myself (Monica Waldron), after I created the florals and styled my Sister-in-Law’s engagement party.

Although I have a creative background (I graduated with a design degree, majoring in Fashion) I’d never worked with flowers before but had developed a love of them from watching my Mother arrange flowers, like she had learnt from her Mother.

For seventeen years I had tried to get a job doing something creative. Finally I saw this as something I could do that I would love, so I took the plunge and started my own Event Styling business. Now I can't imagine doing anything else, as flowers truly fill me with so much happiness. They are an endlessly creative medium and allow me to experiment with colour, form, shape and placement.

We've now extended our offering to provide elegantly designed faux floral arrangements for monthly hire or purchase, as we want others to truly experience the instant joy that floral arrangements can bring. They become a focal point in any home or business venue, transforming and elevating any space to bring warmth, colour and even a sense of nostalgia.

I recently purchased a custom-made artificial floral arrangement for my home staging services through Monica at Meadow and Tea.

I've got no excuse anymore when it comes to birthdays for my daughter's as I have all the artificial flowers and props to use.
Now I basically have to create miniature weddings for them each time haha.
This theme was pink and purple mostly because i told my daughters that their choice for themes are; flowers or flowers haha.
I really loved creating the florals for my eldest daughters birthday. Pink and purple is a lovely combination.

You know you're a flower lover when you go into a room that happens to have your loose flower stems (in my case artificial flower stems) and you spend the next half hour arranging those stems and then you forget what you came into the room for haha

I always feel so flattered to be asked to do collaborations with other talented vendors and people in the wedding industry. They build great connections and relationships and it's wonderful to see other creatively talented people bring ideas, concepts and styling together. Very inspirational.
And the colour palette of choice is beautiful. These images are not from the moodboard, but I'll share more soon.

"You're WEIRD in a good way". Yes that has been said to me, meant in the best possible way haha. I do have a few quirks; I love smelling books. Mostly old ones. Maybe it's because scent holds memories and experiences. I rate the book I'm smelling in this photo as a 7/10 😆.
The second slide shows a book I bought my daughters, but it made them too scared. I thought they were ready, but it was about as successful as our trip to the Gallipoli exhibition at Te Papa; many tears. But yes, I am obsessed with WWII everything including all the artillery, guns, tanks etc and all war movies. I've only met a couple of people in my life that share this same interest.

I've mostly learnt to manage my dislike of loud chewing, but I don't think I'll ever get over it.

Do you have interesting quirks?

Another example of a very impressive artificial flower; Leucadendrons. I love the burgundy tones of these and every leaf and petal is wired so you can open them or close them to how you want them.

Everyone's design process is different. I like to write things out and draw them by hand old skool style like my Dad did when he designed; in an appointment diary book dated 2013 haha. No. It's a 2025 one. But Dad's was always a very dated one.
Designing is important to make sure your idea actually works, but it does take time and often I mull over something quite a bit before I decide on what to do.
You can do some incredible mock ups on Canva, but I haven't attempted to pursue that as it takes a bit to set up.

I've only part-owned one other business before my Event Styling/Floristry business and that was running a cafe/Bakery. You learnt very quickly that you had to make sure that every food item you wanted to sell was costed out down to the cent. You had to work out what each food item cost from the beginning of its life cycle as ingredients, until it reached the final product for the customer. I learnt a lot!
I've applied this knowledge with my artificial flower arrangements, as every arrangement has a recipe and you must balance creativity with financial viability as well as making sure your designs are still accessible for a variety of people to purchase your creations.
It's a tough and sobering part of a business, but you must have your systems running like a well oiled machine, to make sure things run smoothly.
It takes time to set up and heck there's definitely software that makes things easier but that's not in the budget !!

Out on another walk and I did a little comparison of my artificial white Agapanthus compared to the real versions. I think it's a damn fine faux version and that's why I choose the flowers I do; for the way they imitate the real thing.

At least once a week I collect the girls from school on foot and during my walk, I like to check the real versions of my artificial flowers out. The best way to make sure you get the best quality faux flowers and foliage, is to study the real thing; look at colour graduation, petal details like ridges, veins, petal count and shape of petal, as well as overall shape. The first two images are of my faux
Hydrangeas. Pretty loverly I think. What do you reckon?

Such a sweet colour palette of pinks and purples, using my favourite purple artificial flower; Campanula. Not so long ago I saw a white version and I didn't act on buying them and now I can't find them, nor remember what supplier I saw them from😢.

Can you guess if these florals are for a Wedding or a Birthday?

Faux flowers often arrive quite compressed in boxes, so the best way I've found to open them up, is to steam them. It completely transforms them.

This is the second video showing the work I did for creating artificial flower arrangements for an autumn themed birthday. I still can't believe these are all artificial.
I really love these colours (of which there are many), so I tried to bleed the colours into each other through the arrangement, with an overall spiral shape structure.

The winning ticket; for years I have wanted to do a suspended arrangement for a couple's wedding and finally the loveliest couple are giving me the chance to make something spectacular for them. I can't wait to create it. It will challenge me creatively but also the fact that I will be using faux flowers and foliage as well as real flowers and foliage, so careful planning and timing is required.

I bet you were all on the edge of your seats waiting for another episode of "trash faux flower versus top-notch faux flower".
Two very different artificial flowers, two VERY different prices.
The cheap one can serve as a good filler flower in a large ground arrangement or suspended/arch arrangement but the colour is not very natural and it feels plasticy. Versus the expensive rose that is a silk rose with a latex layer, that makes it feel like real petals (these are named real-touch artificial flowers). This expensive one is hand painted and you can see the attention to detail on the petals, on the flower, the buds and the colour of the leaves.

I only became a florist so I could wear a toolbelt.

Not true of course but it was certainly a good excuse to buy one!!! And damn has it been useful. When you're up a ladder holding onto a heavy arch of artificial flowers, with no one to pass you the scissors or rope, then a toolbelt is essential. That and cable ties. Often I like to use reusable velcro tape to be more sustainable, but sometimes you need to be able to cinch something tight and cable ties are the ones for the job. You can actually buy a cheap tool that releases cable ties so you can reuse them.

I was very lucky to get to go back to @anamcaragardens to do the wedding florals for a beautiful couple. It was at this gorgeous venue that I did my first wedding almost three years ago.
I loved the colour palette of this wedding with blush pinks, whites and eucalyptus.
I even hand painted many of my pink artificial flowers, to get the right blush pink tone.

Despite the video making it look easy, it was very challenging securing this arch of flowers, on my own, as faux flowers can get quite heavy with all the steel stems.

What a day it was weather-wise. It rained the day before and the day after!!

I'm that weirdo on the side of the road, raiding the local foliage to give a bit or realism too go along with my artificial floral arrangements. I feel that as a floral artist you immediately are granted a weirdo license to forage on the side of the road. So if you were driving into Otaki today that was me trimming the bush. I found the most beautiful eucalyptus and wildflowers. And yes it was a eucalyptus tree that was free for the taking.
I'm foraging these items for a wedding in Otaki that I was able to do last minute. That's the beauty of faux flowers; they're available whenever. No seasonal restrictions no issues with keeping them alive.

It's incredible what kinds of beauty and variety you can create with artificial flowers.
Lately I've done lots of experimenting for clients and for arrangements that I'd like to sell. After studying a lot of real flower Ikebana arranging and real floral artistry, I had a thought to replicate the use of leaves to create shape, form and movement, by using deconstructed Orchid leaves from @flowersystems . These have incredible bend throughout the whole leaf, allowing me to create those folds. I really love the look it has created, instead of the usual stiff look of an Orchid leaf.
Also featured in this artificial floral arrangement are stunning artificial succulents from @holstens_nz ! I'll definitely be incorporating more of these in future,

Flowers can transform bare spaces. I really feel like the absence of them makes a space like a bar, or reception desk appear so plain, empty and well, like you've removed its clothes and decoration!!

Pantone has announced their colour of the year as white cloud (with a fair amount of disappointment from what I've seen as a response). What do you all think? I feel like white in weddings will always be a thing and isn't really original. There's so many colours out there to celebrate. Why white!???

Studies have shown that when flowers are added to a store, it changes people's shopping habits; they linger longer and more likely to purchase due to the calming atmosphere and feel of the shop. Flowers catch the eye and really can make sales.
Here's three examples of storefronts that show the stunning nature of artificial flowers as a beautiful storefront addition. Would these shops be as enticing without the florals? I don't think so.
The reality is, there's more benefits to adding flowers and foliage to your business than not, which is why Hotels, shopping centres, airports etc make them a feature.

A beautiful burgundy arrangement, with artificial flowers and foliage sourced from SIX different companies to make it! Five are from New Zealand.
I really love these rich tones in this arrangement, which could have the Christmas greenery removed to become a non-Christmas arrangement.

Sometimes when you do an arrangement, you think it's realllll nice until you truly evaluate all it's components and see the gaps and shapes and linear aspects that you're not happy with. I love this artificial flower arrangements colour scheme, but yeah, it needed a tighter composition. I think the beauty of faux florals is you can make things ahead of time and step back and analyse it. Floral artistry always challenges me and I'm always learning from it. How rewarding.

A quick comparison of two artificial orchid flowers, to show you the difference in quality and why I only source the best faux flowers and foliage that I can find and not the cheap and nasty ones.
I attended a market on the weekend and people were shocked that all my flowers and foliage were artificial. That's the true test!

Think blackberry picking, with purple stained fingers in the rich summer sun. Like the name; this faux flower wreath has a rich chocolatey depth to it, with its chocolate beech leaves, that contrasts against the gorgeous mauve of the Magnolia flower. The delightful berry spray and toffee coloured feathery bracken add contrast and accent. Finished off with a blush pink bow.
A wreath to last for years, gracing your front door for Christmas, or hung indoors for a feature.

With a never ending quest to find good foliage to use in my artificial flower arrangements, I've looked to preserving techniques for real foliage.
In a previous post I showed the process for an experiment with glycerine from the lovely @nzpurenature company.
As mentioned in my video; there is a lot of leaf colour variation, but I don't mind this. There's some beautiful toffee colours in there that would work beautifully with other artifical foliage and flowers of similar tones. Even tans and taupes and blush pinks would work.
What it didn't do was preserve the green colour, so I'm not sure if there's a technique that will ever achieve that.
I'd like to try a leaf that starts off with a different colour. Perhaps a purple/burgundy leaf maple.

Cheap and nasty artificial flowers are usually banished from my floral collection, but sometimes they can have their purpose.
These lovely headbands I made for myself and the girls for Halloween this year had some very cheap little numbers glued in. But they really do work for their vibrancy.
I also did all of our makeup, which is a miracle that I pulled it off. I can't even do a steady liquid eye liner.

We had a lot of fun putting our looks together, which were inspired by some incredible images from @sprinkleofai (which were shown in a previous reel). See comments below for the reference images.

Celebrating death? I never really thought about it until I did a 13 stop trip in America. One of the stops was in Tucson, Arizona and it was the Day of The Dead. The whole town celebrated and had a parade. All of the costumes were incredible. I'll never forget it. And then when my Dad died suddenly 3 years ago I understood how cultures celebrate those that have passed. Of course there's utter sadness and grief, but celebrations can be had too.

This is still my favourite Halloween set up. I just love the colours, which were inspired by the epic backdrop. All of the flowers are artificial of course and I got very trigger happy with the gold spray paint. Nothing was safe.

Faux flowers or artificial flowers are great in so many ways. Here's another reason; you can alter their colour immediately with spray paint. Even a partial spray can give depth to a Hydrangea for example, by adding a darker or lighter paint spray colour.

Do Men like flowers? Well, statistics from almost all my reels suggest not much lol. However, here's a story; years ago I did the florals for a friend's event using artificial flowers combined with fresh flowers and I asked a guy friend that attended the event if he liked the flowers. He replied with; "oh I don't like flowers". "Okay, that's fine, but you don't have to like flowers to appreciate the benefits and beauty of them. Did they look good?" Was my reply. "They looked incredible!" was what he responded with. So despite not liking flowers, he did notice their beauty.

The reality is, when florals are done well, even the most indifferent people or audience will notice them. Flowers are a focal point, a talking point and help create the atmosphere, or encourage people to linger longer in shops and maybe even influence them to purchase something.
Flowers are always worth their cost and are never a negative, never detracting from a space. Only enhancing it.
Maybe I can convince more men to embrace flowers over time?

So I was watching a video from @blossomandbranchfarm and she shared this technique of preserving foliage (she mentioned maple leaves and the last image in my reel is the wreath she made from preserved foliage) and she used glycerine. She mixes a 2:1 ratio of warm water to glycerine. I chose to use a cherry branch, so I'm hoping it'll work.
My glycerine was purchased from @nzpurenature New Zealand.

If all goes well, the foliage should be soft and pliable and hopefully can be reused again and again for my faux flower arrangements.
Let's see how it goes after 5 days in its mummy bath.
